Took some photos of the various copies of the “official supplier’s” version of the Appliance that I’ve “deconstructed” over the years. The standard appliance will be sawed open further to determine if there is actually any charcoal anywhere along the central core.

This is a side-by-side picture of the ‘Extra Charcoal’ (top) and ‘Standard’ (bottom) versions of the Official Supplier’s ‘device’. In both devices, the core is clearly in direct contact with the plastic material which is used in place of a nonferrous case.
This picture clearly shows how the bottom inch of the “Extra Charcoal” appliance is molded into the case. The plastic tape, which is layered on top of the white tape, is also clearly visible.
The Extra Charcoal appliance does have charcoal, but it does not fully surround the Carbon/Steel/Glass core.
This Radial Appliance was purchased from the Heritage Store, and was sacrificed to provide a comparison between a classic-design and the official-supplier’s interpretation. When the bottom of the appliance was sawed off, charcoal flows freely from the case. The bottom of the Carbon/Steel/Glass core, which hangs freely without touching the container, is clearly visible.
Left: Standard Official Supplier ‘device’. Plastic tape is clearly visible in the full-sized photo – please click to enlarge.
Center: Radial Appliance sold by the Heritage Store. The core materials in the center are surrounded by charcoal.
Right: The ‘Extra Charcoal’ version of the Official Supplier’s device. The bottom of the core material is encased in solid plastic, and the masking tape is surrounded with some kind of plastic tape.
